Library of Alexandria in Egypt

Library of Alexandria in Egypt, Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The largest library in the world is The United States Library of Congress in Washington D.C. However this Library of Alexandria in Egypt was once the largest library in the world. The Bibliteoca Alexandria was believe to be founded at the beginning of the 3rd century BC. It was then destroyed during the Muslim conquest in 642AD, the books were burned to heat bathwater for the soldiers.

The idea of reviving the old library dates back to 1974, when a committee set up by the Alexandria University selected a plot of land for its new library, between the campus and the seafront, close to where the ancient library once stood.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina was inaugurated in 2003 near the site of the old Library. The dimensions of the project are vast: the library has shelf space for eight million books, with the main reading room covering 70,000 m² on eleven cascading levels.6

Condom Restaurant in Taiwan

After watching the Condom Fashion in China, you must be wondering if there is any restaurant is running with the theme of Condom?? These people in Taiwan are freaking creative. They could come out sort of gimmick to bring new business opportunities. Just like these below.

The restaurant — called Banana & Condom Restaurant — opened in Taichung, central Taiwan, under the guidance and funding of the Department of Health. It uses condoms to spread the message of safe sex and gives each customer a free condom.

Does anyone want to franchise this??

Metro Arts

Komsomolskaya station, Moscow

Komsomolskaya station, Moscow
.

I never know that a Train Station/Subway/Underground/Metro… or whatever you call it, can be so stylish and artistic. Take a look at the galleries of these awsome stations.

The above was Komsomolskaya station in Moscow, built in 1952. It reminds me the Matrix’s fighting scene.

.

Subways need not be boring or dreary! Many operators of metros, subways or underground railways want to attract more passengers with good station design. This often means extra effort and higher costs for the metro operators but it seems to pay when a metro is more than just a means of transport but something the residents can be proud of.

Read below which metro systems double as the world’s longest art galleries and in which cities you can see stunning underground palaces, museums, aquariums, an ancient chapel, or the world’s first example of computer-generated architecture – or simply user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing underground stations. ” Source [Metro Bits]

Ultimate Highway Experience in Nepal

Nepal is a hilly country and road transportation leading to remote parts of Nepal is mostly a nightmare.

NepalHighway01

I read an article “The Karnali Express: Bumping on for 52 Hours” (Jumla to Surkhet) by Dinesh Wagle who happened to be traveling in the road because of the adverse weather condition in the Jumla airport. He had to cross numerous landslides, life threatening cliffs and rivers on the way. I have borrowed some of the photos from the article to show life is not easy (might look adventurous so some!) in these areas.

Heavy Rains create havoc in India

IndianFlood01

Isn’t it strange that an economy which is rising at 9-10 % per annum is unable to control the basic thing as rains in its major cities. Here are few pictures of the India’s metropolitan cities, Mumbai & Kolkata which have been devastated by Monsoon Rains over there this year.

It’s high time Indian Government takes some emergency measures to control the devastation caused by the rains in India.

Below is a picture of an Indian hand rickshaw puller who is pushing his rickshaw through the waters after a heavy downpour in Calcutta / Kolkata city in West Bengal state of India. There is another picture of a Taxi submerged in the Mumbai city in India. Other pictures are also from India where heavy rains have created havoc.

Titan Missile Museum in Arizona

Atomic Tourism - Titan missile museum

You may have seen the devastating power of an atomic bomb on my Hiroshima post. Now you may visit one of the ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) silo in Titan Missile Museum in Sahuarita, Arizona, about 20 miles south of Tucson. You may have a chance to have a look at this monster which could have been launched in just 58 seconds, hurling a city-destroying nuclear warhead at the Soviet Union. Armageddon is not a pleasant prospect.

Atomic Tourism - Titan missile museumsDuring the heart of the cold war, from the 1960s to the mid-80s, the 54 Titan II underground complexes like this one — with its blast doors, firing console and spartan crew quarters, all preserved as the Titan Missile Museum and operated by the nonprofit Arizona Aerospace Foundation — were part of the American program of nuclear deterrence, on constant alert to keep aggressive impulses in the Soviet Union at bay.

10 Most Dangerous Destinations

No 1. Somalia

Somalia

The U.S. doesn’t have an embassy in Somalia, putting American citizens who travel there out of reach of U.S. assistance. Somalia’s federal government recently retook control of much of the country from the Union of Islamic Courts, but this could mean less stability ahead, not more. Interclan fighting and attacks on foreigners are frequent, as are abductions.

Hong Kong Day and Night

Hong Kong Day and Night

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China is one of the two special administrative regions of the People’s Republic of China, the other being Macau. The territory, comprising over 260 islands, is commonly known as Hong Kong, but was often written Hongkong in older English texts.

The Hong Kong Government officially changed the name of Hongkong to Hong Kong on 3 September 1926. In Chinese, it means “The Fragrant Harbor,” and it has also been called “The Pearl of the Orient,” “The Gateway to the East.”

Hong Kong was a British colony from 1842 until the People’s Republic of China resumed the exercise of sovereignty in 1997. It is governed as a special administrative region under the Basic Law of Hong Kong, the territory’s constitution. Under the terms of the Sino-British Joint Declaration and Basic Law, Hong Kong will retain a relatively high degree of autonomy until at least 2047, fifty years after the transfer of sovereignty.
